Information about IBHS FORTIFIED Roof installation and certification.

## What this page covers

FORTIFIED is a paid upgrade — you pay for the installation and state grants of up to $6,000–$10,000 reimburse you after certification. No income limits. Annual insurance discounts of 20–30%+ then continue paying you back for years after that.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are there grants available to help pay for a FORTIFIED roof in NC?

Yes — the NC Insurance Underwriting Association (NCIUA) funds two annual grant programs with no income limits. In New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, and 15 other coastal counties, the Strengthen Your Coastal Roof program offers grants up to $6,000. For properties east of the Intracoastal Waterway, the Strengthen Your Roof program offers up to $10,000. Homeowners apply directly at strengthenyourcoastalroof.com or strengthenyourroof.com. You must hold an active NCIUA (Beach Plan) policy — NCJUA/FAIR Plan policies are not eligible. Rounds open annually, are first-come first-served, and deplete quickly.

### Does a FORTIFIED roof cost more than a standard replacement?

Yes — FORTIFIED is a paid upgrade. You pay for the full installation at the time of the project, and it typically costs 5–15% more than a standard replacement due to the double felt underlayment, ring-shank nails, upgraded drip edge, and third-party inspection fee. Eligible Beach Plan policyholders can apply for a grant reimbursement of up to $6,000 after IBHS issues the certificate — but the grant comes after the work is done, not at the time of signing. Annual insurance savings of 20–30%+ then continue recovering the remaining difference over time.

### How much can I save on homeowners insurance with a FORTIFIED roof in NC?

Coastal NC homeowners commonly see 20–30% or more. Call your insurer before starting the project and ask specifically about their FORTIFIED discount — NC law requires them to disclose it. On a $3,500/year policy a 25% discount returns $875 per year. We can help you ask the right questions.

### Who certifies a FORTIFIED roof — is it my contractor?

No. Certification requires an independent, IBHS-approved inspector — typically a licensed engineer or home inspector — who verifies the installation against IBHS standards before issuing the designation. Your contractor cannot self-certify. We install to spec and coordinate the inspector, but the outcome is independent of us.

### How long does FORTIFIED certification last?

FORTIFIED designations are issued for a 5-year term. Before it expires, a certified FORTIFIED Evaluator conducts a renewal inspection — typically a single site visit if the roof is intact and unmodified. The designation transfers with the property when you sell, and when you eventually replace the roof a full new evaluation re-certifies it at that time.
