Overview of the North Carolina roof insurance claim process.

## What this page covers

Most homeowners only file a roof claim once or twice in their lives. We guide people through this process every week. Here's exactly what happens from storm to settlement.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need a public adjuster?

Most homeowners don't. A public adjuster works on your behalf for a percentage of the settlement — typically 10–15%. On a straightforward residential claim with a good contractor present at the adjuster visit, that fee is rarely justified. Where they add value: large commercial claims, denied claims, or complex disputes.

### Will filing a claim raise my insurance rates?

Possibly. Insurers can raise rates or non-renew after claims, though NC law restricts non-renewal for a single weather claim on a policy in good standing. The calculus depends on your policy, carrier, and claim history. We recommend calling your agent before filing if you're unsure the damage is claim-worthy.

### What is depreciation holdback?

When your insurer pays ACV (actual cash value), they deduct depreciation — the estimated wear on your roof over time. That withheld amount is released after you complete the work and submit proof. This is why getting the full settlement often requires finishing the job.

### Can the contractor work directly with my insurance?

We can communicate directly with your adjuster and submit documentation on your behalf, but the claim and payment relationship is between you and your insurer. Assignment of Benefits (AOB) arrangements — where you sign over claim rights to the contractor — are generally not something we do.

### What if my claim is denied?

Request the denial in writing and the specific policy language they're citing. Many denials are successfully appealed or supplemented with additional documentation. We've helped homeowners get reversed decisions with better photos and a stronger scope of loss.
